Mixed-media painter Suzanne Howes-Stevens of Connecticut and sculptor Sally Hepler of New Mexico are making their Nashville debut in a new exhibition running through November at Belle Meade's Gallery One.
After seeing their creations, we couldn't think of a better compli- ment for this November's visual arts of Nfocus. According to Gallery One Owner Shelley Liles McBurney, "There is a certain lyricism, a ?uid- ity, that connects the landscape paintings of Suzanne Howes Stevens with the abstract sculpture of Sally Hepler."
Look closely at Suzanne's land- scape paintings, soft and delicate with the art, just like nature, know- ing no borders running outside the lines of her work. Even more interesting, she implements a trade- mark process of painting over maps mounted on canvas or panel. These mixed-media paintings incorporate topographical maps and nautical charts beneath layered oil-painted images and text.
Sally's amazing interplay of curves and metal hand-fabricated from bronze or stainless steel in her sculptures will leave you mesmer- ized. These works, which range in size from tabletop to monumental, are most certainly three-dimen- sional pieces with each view from different views more intriguing and powerful than the next. They are at once powerful and graceful.
Gallery One, located at 5153 Harding Pike in the Belle Meade Galleria, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and by appointment. For more infor- mation about the exhibition contact 352-5006 or visit galleryonebiz. EN
